Par 72 / 5,870 metres playing off yellow. Quinta do Lago Sul ("South") was designed by US architect William Mitchell and opened in 1974. Since then it has played host to the Portugal Open eight times, between the years of 1976 and 2001, as well as being the venue for numerous other professional and amateur tournaments. The course is situated in a unique landscape of dense pine groves, lakes and wild plants, and the holes of the course offer golfers wide landing areas and fairways lined by dense copses of pine. The layout of the Quinta do Lago Sul course encourages the golfer to use the driver. During the course of a round, however, the golfer must face several doglegs and a whole series of strategically-positioned obstacles that make the game very difficult for those who wander off the optimal line. The front nine holes favour a draw, whilst on holes 10-18 a fade will have better results. Holes eight, 15 and 18 have a reputation of being the most demanding for professionals.
Par 72 / 5,724 metres playing off yellow. The Norte ("North") course is the result of a co-operation between three designers. In 1974 William Mitchell designed holes 1-5 and 15- 18, and the two Americans Joseph Lee and Rocky Roquemore subsequently designed holes 6-14, thus completing the course in 1989. The terrain is typical for the region: sandy soil covered with heather, gorse, and wild flowers interspersed by the odd pine tree. In spring the rough is covered by a carpet of beautiful wild flowers. The greens at the Quinta do Lago Norte course are sown with Penn bent grass, which provides excellent putting conditions all year round. On the fairways and tees hybrid-Bermuda grass has been used, which guarantee optimum playing conditions throughout the year. To sum up; the combination of hilly greens, water hazards and well-positioned bunkers makes for a special playing experience.
Par 72 / 6,480 metres playing off white. This former orange grove is now an extraordinarily beautiful golf course that offers a totally different golfing experience and is an absolute must for all those who want to play their favourite sport in optimal conditions and who expect top quality service tailored to their personal requirements. Narrow fairways and perfectly defined greens require the highest levels of concentration and precision in order to master the ever-changing challenges of this hilly course, with its unique layout. The Laranjal golf course is embedded in a landscape of pine, cork oak and orange trees, with a natural watercourse and five spectacular lakes. The course has five par 5s, eight par 4s and five par 3s. The greens have been sown with Penn A4 grass, which provides an excellent putting surface all year round, and the fairways have been sown with Bermuda grass. Designer Santana da Silva has created a course that cannot fail to impress.
Par 72 / 5,299 metres/ 27-hole. The original 18 holes of this course were designed by American golf course architect Ronald Fream, and the additional nine holes, designed by Portuguese designer Santana da Silva, opened in 2007. Each of the three 9-hole courses is a par 36 and has its own name: The Pines (Pinheiros), The Corks (Sobreiros) and The Olives (Oliveiras). All three courses start at the Pinheiros Altos clubhouse. The entire golf course lies within the Ria Formosa Nature Reserve and the three courses are all completely different to each other. The first nine holes stretch across sandy terrain surrounded by magnificent pine trees with several hills, the second two nines extend over gently rolling hills with plenty of water hazards. All three have firm, quick greens sown with Penncross bent grass, in combination with fairways sown with Bermuda grass. This is a top golf resort! Heavily reduced green fees for guests staying at the Formosa Park!
Par 72 / 5,837 metres. Portugal's number one and one of the best courses in Europe! Designed by American Joseph Lee, the San Lorenzo course was opened in 1988. The simultaneous challenge and allure of this course lie in its layout and the rhythm of the holes. Each individual hole presents a unique challenge for the golfer without taking any enjoyment away from the game. The San Lorenzo course takes advantage of the magnificent topography of the region and snakes its way through gently rolling hills covered in pine trees, bordering on a nature reserve and the saltwater lakes of Ria Formosa. The fairways of the course are sown with Bermuda grass and the greens are in perfect condition. Overall, it offers perfect golfing conditions all year round. The San Lorenzo course is laid out in a figure of eight, in the centre of which is the clubhouse featuring comfortable locker rooms, a bar and a restaurant.
