Par 72 / 5,740 metres playing off yellow. The Herdade da Aroeira Golf Resort with its two 18-hole golf courses is approximately 30 kilometres or 20 minutes from Lisbon in the heart of an approx. 350 hectare preserve and around 600 metres from the white, sandy Caparica beach. Opened in 1973, Frank Pennink designed this championship course, which blends harmoniously into the landscape. Experts rate this course as one of the best in Europe and it has twice played host to the Portugal Open and has been the venue for the Portugal Ladies Open on several occasions. The Aroeira I course snakes through a vast pine forest and has a design that is rich in variety. Of the front nine, hole eight is particularly impressive, a 190 metre par 3 with a particularly difficult sloping approach to the green. On the back nine, watch out for hole eleven, with a green protected by bunkers and water hazards.
Par 72 / 5,339 metres playing off yellow. The second course at the Herdade da Aroeira Golf Resort was also designed by a well-known golf course designer, Donald Steel. The 18-hole course incorporates five lakes; although its various tee positions make the course playable for golfers of all abilities. More experienced players will however acknowledge that this course does present one or two difficulties. Contrary to Aroeira I, this course has several fairway bunkers, which in type and difficulty are reminiscent of the better courses in Great Britain. And the above mentioned five lakes make a round here very interesting, especially on the back nine. With the opening of the Aroeira II golf course in 2000, the resort has now become one of the finest in the entire Lisbon area.
